            This 5-part series traces Jewish history in Judah from the days of Alexander the Great until the latter years of the Hasmonean Kingdom. Special focus is placed on:

*      The Chanuka miracle

*      Leaders of the Hasmonean Kingdom

            What is the deeper message of Chanuka and how can it speak to us in a land of religious freedom? What connections can be drawn between the influences of Hellenism and those of our prevalent culture?

3.      Taking Purim Out of the Box            Listen

          This presentation has two primary objectives:

  1. To reject the common misconception that the Purim story was an isolated historical event, with little direct bearing on the events which surrounded it
  2. To identify an important message within the Purim story that applies to our lives today

4.      The 3 Weeks: A Historical Perspective (1 or 2 Sessions)

            A historical review of the events surrounding the destruction of both Batei Mikdash. Session 1 will focus on the conquest and multi-tiered exile of Judah at the hands of the Babylonian king Nevuchadnezzar. Jewish life in Babylon will be discussed as well, in addition to the Jewish return led by Zerubavel. Session 2 will examine the fall of Judah and destruction of the Second Temple at the hands of Rome in 70 CE, together with its aftermath. Specific emphasis will be placed on the role that sin’as chinam (baseless hatred) played in the Jews’ defeat.

5.      The Tannaim and Amoraim: What Do Our Students Really Know About Them?

            Our teachers spend significant time teaching the words of the Tannaim (Mishna) and Amoraim (Gemara), yet many lack a strong command of just who these great personalities were and the times in which they lived. This workshop will organize and give historical context to these periods. Focus will be placed on areas of residence and relevant current events. Prominent individuals and their achievements will be highlighted.

6.      The Lives, Times & Lasting Impact of Rashi & Rambam            Listen

            The two most influential personalities for world Jewry during the Middle Ages (Rishonim) were Rashi (R’ Shlomo Yitzchaki, 1040 – 1105) and Rambam (R’ Moshe ben Maimon / Maimonidies, 1135 – 1204). These sessions (up to 3) provide an in-depth look at each one’s life, manifold achievements, and overall impact on the Jewish people. The sessions take a broader look at world events as well.
