The Jewish View on Stem Cell Research

Stem cell research holds great promise in the war on disease. It makes sense that all people should be involved in fighting disease. As Jews, were are aware of our people's long history in medicine as well as our religious commitment to the preservation of life.
In recent years, science has uncovered a huge potential for cure and repair of the human body via manipulation of stem cells. Balanced against the the benefits of such research is the possibility of abuse and careless implementation of scientific innovation.
Our responsibility as educated people and Jews is to be aware of those issues that must be addressed when assessing the propriety of stem cell research. Specifically, what does Jewish law expect of us in making these assessments? What mitzvot must we consider? What procedures shall we follow or avoid?
This webquest will help you educate yourself in these issues and help you form an educated opinion concerning whether to support or oppose stem cell research. You will educate yourself in the fundamentals of stem cells and its research, explore biblical and classical sources, review societal and political views, study Rabbinical and Jewish professional responsa and publications, and compare the Jewish standpoint to those of other religions.
We hope that you enjoy this webquest and feel a sense of educated position on the subject.

Good Luck!
