Reviewing and broadening knowledge on Rosh Hashana for grade 5, focusing on the concepts of teshuva, tefila and tsedaka. Students have learned some basics of Rosh Hashana in previous years, including the symbols, and the basics of mitswot and minhagim relating to this holiday. Due to the few hours of Jewish classes (2 hours per week), their knowledge of this holiday is limited. Most of them are interested and eager to learn. Due to the fact that the majority of the students are from non-religious homes, the unit will focus more on the emotional than on the halachic aspects of the holiday. * Students will be able to explain the concepts of teshuva, tefilla and tsedaka.
* Students will know the special relationship between these concepts and the High Holidays
* Students will be able to apply some of what they learned in their daily lives.
The unit is based upon the national curriculum for Jewish Supplementary Schools of the NIK, the organization of Jewish Communities in the Netherlands.
4. Audience and pre-requisites: The unit is written for children not attending a Jewish day school. Most of them come from non-observant homes. Both the students and their parents are interested in learning more about Judaism. Students have been attending supplementary school for 4 years, and have had a maximum of 12 two-hour lessons on Rosh Hashana. Jewish knowledge of parents is limited as well. * Students are able to read Hebrew and understand some basic concepts in Hebrew. * Students have a basic knowledge of Rosh Hashana and are more or less familiar with the following topics: - the symbols of Rosh Hashana: shofar, apples and honey, round challot, greeting cards - the story of the Akeda - differences between Rosh Hashana and New Year - tashlich - other names of Rosh Hashana - the basics of some mitswot and minhagim
Rehearsal: topics mentioned under 4. Teshuva: the ideas behind teshuva and how students can apply this mitswa within their daily lives. The Aseret Y’mei Teshuva and the difference between Rosh Hashana and Jom Kippur in relation to teshuva. Tefilla: the concept and the importance of kavana. Some basic tefillot. Tsedaka: the concept; Maimonides eight steps of tsedaka. LESSON 1 Topic: Rehearsal. Use pages 1-4 of the workbook ' Teshuva, Tefilla, Tsedaka' to rehearse basics of topics mentioned under 4. Refer to data-base or books (copies should be available). If worksheet is done well, the words teshuva, tefilla, tsedaka appear as introduction to new subject matter. Teshuva: the basics of this topic were studied last year (see booklet Level Dalet). For level Hee, this topic is dealt with in the unit for Jom Kippur. Family activity: creating poster on Teshuva (level Dalet).
LESSON 2
Tefilla: page 5 - 12 of the workbook . 2 groups of students read the stories on page 5 and 6 and act them out. On page 7 and 8 students compare and discuss both stories. Page 9 - 12 are an introduction to some of the tefillot, such as Avinu Malkenu and Unetanne Tokef.
LESSON 3 Tsedaka : page 12 - 20 of the workbook. Introduction Tsedaka through Unetanne Tokef. Page14 - 20: Students compare solutions with the eight steps of Maimonides.
Students will create illustrated 'machzor' for Rosh Hashana, for children, explaining them the basics of this jomtov. They will do this at home, on their own or together with parent(s), a friend or sibling. When students compose the list of topics, encourage them to include some of the issues dealt with in this unit. Help them to find extra information on Rosh Hashana, both on the web and in books listed under resources. To create the machzor, it is easiest to buy a ready made photo-album with plastic pages, so that children can put text and illustration facing eachother. In case pages are not A-5, adjust instructions to students. .
