Guide Goals
and Objectives
Aim - 5th and 6th graders and families
will explore the Shalosh Regalim as they were observed in the 2nd Temple
era. They will compare and contrast the different celebrations.
Rationale - Learners see their lives
as only in the here and now. They need to understand the
agricultural, historical and religious aspects of our oldest holy days in
order to understand some of the rituals that we have today. Goals and Objectives - Students will learn and understand: 1. The term Shalosh Regalim. 2. The other names for Pesach, Shavuot and Sukkot. 3. The Hebrew date and moon phase of each holiday. 4. The agricultural aspects of each holiday. 5. The historical aspects of each holiday. 6. The religious aspects of each holiday. 7. Use internet web-sites for research.
Audience - 5th and 6th grade students
in Jewish Community Schools and families.
Prerequisites - Some prior
knowledge of the current observances of the holidays will facilitate and
stimulate learning. A computer with internet connection is a must.
Student should also have some Hebrew reading skills. Each student will be assigned one of the Shalosh Regalim: Pesach, Shavuot or Sukkot. All students should fill out Worksheet 1 (What I Know About _______) on their assigned holiday. A class discussion to fill in the blanks should follow. Day 2-3 Use the webquest to fill in Worksheet 2 (____________ in 2nd Temple Times) by going to specific websites to research the questions. Day 4-5 Upon completion of internet tasks, the students will meet with students who studied the same holiday to compare notes. They will then go to their family to compare and contrast the different holidays in 2nd Temple Times using Worksheet 3 (Compare the Holidays). Day 6-8 The conclusion will be a poster project or a Power Point presentation, based on a comparison-contrast of the different holidays. This should include a persuasive paragraph describing why their holiday is the best one in the Jewish calendar. Day 9-10 Students will present projects to the class.
