Introduction
Before beginning to study the various laws, customs and dates
for the the Jewish Holidays, a student must begin to understand how the
Jewish Calendar works. Learning how to navigate the Jewish Calendar, and
to recognize the dates for all the major Jewish Holidays and events
helps the students to better understand the other details of the
Holiday. Click

Aim
The aim of this area of curriculum is for the 6th grade
student to understand the importance that the Lunar calendar plays in
Jewish religion. By understanding how to navigate the Jewish Calendar, students gain insight into why the Jewish Holidays must
fall when they do, and the impact of their dates on the Jewish nation as
a whole. Students will gain an understanding of the various Holidays and
events and their laws, customs and historical background with relation
to when each Holiday falls on the calendar. Click

Rationale
By understanding how to navigate the Jewish Calendar, students gain insight into why the Jewish Holidays must fall
when they do, and the impact of their dates on the Jewish nation as a
whole. Students need to understand that the Jewish Holidays don't
necessarily come out at the same time every year on the solar calendar,
yet they do fall on the same date every year on the lunar calendar.
After learning the differences between the two calendars, and upon
examining and exploring the Holidays and events found there, students will be able
to grasp the various cyclical events in Jewish culture that revolve
around the lunar calendar and it's cycles. We can then begin to explore these cyclical
events as a prelude to the study of the Jewish Holidays in depth.
