1. Aim:  The aim of this web quest is to familiarize elementary students in a community Jewish Day School with Rashi , his life. his work and the period he lived in.


2. Rationale
Rashi is considered to be one of the essential commentators of  the Torah. Through this web quest students will be introduced to the life of Rashi, the period he lived in and the Jewish issues that concerned him. This will broaden their Judaic educational knowledge and emphasize the essential role of Rashi's interpretation in the learning of Chumash. This web quest will be an introduction to a study of Rashi's Commentary.


3. Goals and objectives:

bulletStudents will locate and interpret different sources about Rashi
bulletStudents will learn about the period Rashi lived in.
bulletStudents will familiarize themselves with Rashi's Font  כתב רש"י
bulletStudents will understand the importance of Rashi's Commentary.
bulletStudents will strengthen their Power Point skills.


4. Audience and pre-requisites:

This web quest is aimed at 4th Grade students.

    The students need to be able to:
  1.  browse the internet.
  2.  read Hebrew.
  3.  use PowerPoint.
  4.  cut and paste.


5. Description of subject-matter:  The subject matter covered here draws from Social Studies, Jewish studies and Language Arts.


6. Instructional plan: 
The web quest will be divide into four parts:

Part 1:With the help of different resources the students will be able to answer different activity sheets. These will focus on Rashi, his life , the period he lived in and his special contribution to understanding of Torah .

Part 2: The students will watch a video about Rashi that will give them more insight into his life and the period he lived in. They will also be introduced to Rashi's commentary in a sample lesson. It is the teachers prerogative to decide what and how much to teach. Both activities will be done as a class

Part 3:They will participate in an online Rashi Font workshop.

Part 4: They will work in pairs in the summarizing activities which will include a Power Point presentation about 10 interesting facts about Rashi.


7. Materials:

The materials will include web resources, Biblical and Rashi text, work sheets and a film about Rashi.

 


8. Plans for assessment and evaluation

The students will create a final project-A power point presentation.

The students worksheet will be assessed for completion, clarity and content.
