Note on year coverage and overlap

(Note is new as of 7/1/02)
The Webalizer has now been running for two years in some coverage areas. The archived reports, where available, are linked as "2000/1" (for July 2000 through June 2001) and "2001/2" (for July 2001 through June 2002) following the description of the cverage area. The main link from the coverage area name (e.g. "School Web Sites", "WIT") is to the current year, which will hold up to 12 monthly reports, including the current month. With each new month, the oldest one in the current area will drop off. Thus, several months will be available either in the current area or in the 2001/2 archive, though the extent of this overlap will decrease (to zero) as we approach July 2003.

Notes on interpreting the statistics

Full information is of course available from the Webalizer home, and there is also a Webalizer Quick Help page. Questions and suggestions about the local configurations can be sent to tech-coord@cuip.uchicago.edu. Really, quite a bit will need adjusting, and that depends on your input; the length of the various "top" lists can be changed, and probably reports other than the overall one can readily do without time-of-day tables and country rankings.

Here are a few terms the Webalizer reports distinguish in what may be an unfamiliar way:

Hits
Essentially, each entry in the log is a hit, representing one request to the server, successful or unsuccessful.
Files
Successful requests. Number of files, of any type, delivered.
Pages
Static or generated web pages delivered. For instance, each HTML (or similar) file, together with included images and other accoutrements (though they are delivered as separate fles), counts for a single page.
Visits
The analysis program uses browsing site IP addresses, together with timing of hits, to put together a notion of a contiguous visit from one user on one occasion. This is rather approximate, certainly, and is thrown off by caching proxies (such as AOL) or computers behind a firewall with masqueraded addresses (such as CPS).

All *.uchicago.edu sites are hidden, but are represented in groupings.

The links below go to a summary page for the server or subarea indicated. If you then click on a month name, in the first column of the second chart on the summary page, you will go to a detailed report covering that month in a quite different way from what the summary displays.

The areas covered

CUIP server overall
Shows HTTP (web) hits, files, and pages by day and so on, top URLs here (including groupings), top external sites accessing this web (including groupings), and some other curiosa. (2000/1), (2001/2)
CUIP Project organizational site
Restricted to the CUIP project organizational pages proper (excluding all specialized project and initiative areas). (2001/2)
Chicago WebDocent (on the separate CWD server)
The areas used for the Chicago WebDocent project. CWD obtained its own server in February 2002, and statistics after that are under webalizer on that server. That's where the current link above will go. (2000/1, on this server), (Jul 2001 - Feb 2002, on this server),
FTP service
Includes both uploading and downloading. Detail reports similar to above, but only as suitable for FTP. (2000/1), (2001/2)
School web sites
Like the overall HTTP (web) report, but restricted to the school webs hosted on this server, and with reporting somewhat adjusted for that dataset. (2000/1), (2001/2)
WIT
Like the overall HTTP (web) report, but restricted to the areas used for the Web Institute for Teachers, and its forerunner courses, conducted altogether 1997-2001. (2000/1), (2001/2)
WIT 2002 only.
No grouping of URLs.
eCUIP
Taken from the lib.uchicago.edu server and restricted to the areas used for eCUIP, the Digital Library. THIS AREA STILL UNDER DEVELOPMENT.
Personal Homes
Like the overall HTTP (web) report, but restricted to the areas used for individual home directory WWW folders. (2000/1), (2001/2)
Summer Enrichment Program, Computer Class
Like the overall HTTP (web) report, but restricted to the areas used for the Summer Enrichment Program Computer Class, 1999 and 2000. (2000/1), (2001/2)
Documentation
The areas used for documentation supplied in HTML form with programs installed on the server. They were added to the web server area just as a convenience for our own users and admins, but were not blocked from outside access. Here we're just checking whether this is an excessive claim on our bandwidth (it doesn't seem so, so far). (2000/1), (2001/2)
Training
Traffic in the area for CUIP Training Materials and Projects. (2000/1), (2001/2)
Usage Statistics
Traffic on these Webalizer reports. (2000/1), (2001/2)
