Your goal for this lesson
- Design an empty WebQuest as a new FrontPage Web
- Experiment with different themes and designs
- Optional: Add content to your WebQuest
- Upload your WebQuest to the server, and then
show your mentor.

Planning and setting up a new Web
FrontPage can edit multiple Webs at once. While
working on one Web, you can
- Use File | New and
the Task Pane opens to the "New" Pane.
- Click "More Web
Site Templates"..

- Click the Browse button, go to My Webs.
- Create a new folder called webquest.
- Choose the Empty Web template
- Click Okay, and you get a new web, with nothing in it:.
(Note that this will be a "subWeb" of your main personal
FrontPage Web.)

Note that if you open a new Web while
working on another, FrontPage will be open TWICE: once for each Web you
are working on. You'll see two instances on the Task bar.

Don't get too confused! Remember, you can
easily switch between applications by holding down the Alt key and
pressing Tab or by clicking the appropriate button on the Task bar.
Now you are going to use the Navigation view to create
the pages in your new web.
 |
Click the Web Site icon in
the bar at the top of your window. |

Click the Navigation icon on the Views Bar at the bottom of the page

There is a special toolbar
in the top right of the navigation window. Click New
Page button on the toolbar. A "home page" for your new Web
appears.

Each time you click "New Page" a new page is created.
- To select any page, click once on it.
- New pages are always created as
" the child" of the selected page. To move pages
around just click and drag them.
- To change the title of a page,
right click on the page icon and choose Rename.
The title of the file should be selected. Type a new
name.
- Note that this does not change the name of the file,
only the title. It is wise to change both, instead of relying on
FrontPage default names.

- To change the name of a file, right click on
the file name in the folder list and choose Rename. Type a new
name. (Be sure to include the "extension" .htm.)
Using the navigation view, create all the pages
necessary for a webquest. Remember
the main parts of a Webquest. (See http://projects.edtech.sandi.net/staffdev/buildingblocks/p-index.htm)
for reminder.)

Applying Themes
"Themes" are FrontPage's word for applying a consistent
look and feel to a set of web pages. Themes can be applied to an
entire Web or just some of the pages in the Web. Themes are so
easy to apply that you can experiment with different Themes until you
find one that you like. You can even create your own Themes (although
we won't get into that here). For more on creating your own
themes, see "Create a New Theme" in Help.
To apply a Theme to your entire Webquest site, use
Format | Theme.. On the right side of the Task Pane
will open its theme pane.

The "Vivid colors" checkbox alters any theme to
make the colors more "extreme" or colorful. Experiment with the
checkbox to see what you like.
- The "Active graphics" checkbox
affects how your link buttons and other graphics behave. You
can't preview the effect in the Themes preview window. To
see the effect, simply apply a theme without "Active graphics",
click OK, and then click the Preview tab at the bottom of any
page editing window, then do the same with "Active graphics"
checked. (I think you'll like the Active graphics
more dynamic and interactive.) option. It makes the web
site
- The "Background picture" checkbox
allows you say whether or not your Theme should include the
background. Some people find background graphics
distracting, or prefer to use their own. If you
uncheck the "Background picture"
box, your theme will have a solid color background.
- Choose "Create new theme" if
you want to start from scratch.
To Choose a Theme
- In the Theme pane, scroll to find an
appropriate theme. Click the theme and a dropdown menu
appears.

- Choosing "Apply as default
theme" adds the theme to all current and future pages in the website.
- Apply to selected page(s)"
will apply the theme to whichever pages you have selected in the folder
list.
- Customize" allows you to make changes to
the theme before you apply it. You will need to save your
customized theme before you can apply it. Just experiment.
Optional: If you have time, you can spend some
time adding CONTENT to your WebQuest. For more about WebQuest
content, see the WebQuest home page at http://webquest.sdsu.edu/
Uploading your WebQuest.
- Once you have finished with your choice of Theme, and
(optionally) added some content to your Webquest, Publish it to the
server. Remember that the Publish address is http://scook.webinstituteforteachers.org/~USERNAME/webquest.
- If you need a reminder of how to do this,
