How to Get Help in/about FrontPage

Agenda:

Goal for this lesson

After you have completed this lesson, you will know how to use FrontPage's online help system, the Microsoft  web site, and other web sites to help you to learn FrontPage.

"Help"ful resources

  • The Help system comes with FrontPage and should be installed on your local computer when you install FrontPage.  Access this by using Help | Microsoft Office FrontPage Help or by pressing F1. Your FrontPage window will shrink to the left portion of the screen and  the Task Pane will open to its "FrontPage Help" Pane.

  • Online help is the default help source.  In the search box, type a keyword or words that describe the topic.  Then click the green arrow to the right of the box.  This will open the "Search Results" pane, with a list of possible topics and another search box at the bottom.

  • What if you don't want to search "Microsoft Office Online" again? Use the dropdown menu in this search box to choose another place to search.   Note that there are several choices, including "Offline Help".

  • If you don't want to search online, you can use the Task Pane dropdown menu to go directly to the "Search Results" pane, and then change the search area as above.

  • The Keyboard shortcuts help screen is especially usefulAll those little blue triangles along the left side of the topics are called "twisties." If you click one, the content below that topic expands, and the "twistie" points down instead of to the right, thus:

More Help!

You'll often find great resources just using a search engine to search for FrontPage and other words describing your problem.

Activity:

Choose a partner. Then, choose one or more  of the following questions to work on together. Use the resources listed above.

  • How do I change the background color of a page?
  • How do I insert a link to an external site?
  • How do I add a column to a table I've created in FrontPage?
  • How do I change the background color of one cell in a FrontPage table?
  • How do I center a table in FrontPage?
  • What's the "layout view" and how does it differ from the "standard" view?
  • How can I find out how many seconds it will take to download the page I'm working on?
  • How can I create a Table of Contents for my web site?
  • How do I change the color used for links?
  • How do I make a pop-up window containing a larger version of an image?

Open a Word document to type your "findings." Use this window to keep notes during this activity. Be sure to list the SOURCE for any information you find.

Use the resources listed above to find all you can about this topic.

Use Google.com to search the web for information about your topic. Try putting 'FrontPage 2003' in the search string along with words describing your topic.

Be ready to "report out" on your findings to the larger group, or use the  WIT listserve to send your findings.
